Lambeth Council

2004-06 Communications strategic management.

Inspire Communications supported Lambeth Council’s senior communications management over two years. We ran the council’s communications team for three months during a sabbatical, managing a £1.3million budget. We also fulfilled the deputy head of communications function for 18 months.

We managed all the strategy, media, consultation, stakeholder relations, design, print, internal and external departmental communications, and also a large-scale recruitment programme. Under our direction the council’s team delivered all internal and external communications strategy and marketing materials for its 5000 staff and 270,000 residents, including the council’s residents’ magazine.

For six months we managed all communications for the (then called) Social Services department. This included an update and redesign of more than 30 publications, all internal communications, event management, media enquiries, and maintaining excellent links with other departments and partners.

Key projects included:

  • Communications for the London terrorist bombings in July 2005. (see case studies)
  • Developing and delivering a wide-ranging communications strategy for a council-wide reorganisation. (see case studies)
  • Managing an assessment and restructure of the communications team’s procurement of suppliers.
  • Developing and implementing communications and crisis strategy on a long-running and politically sensitive eviction. (see case studies)
  • Message in the Bottle campaign. (see case studies)
  • Managing communications around the sudden departure of the chief executive.

Surrey County Council (SCC)

2007 New internal magazine for councillors

We wrote and edited a new quarterly newsletter for the council’s Estates Planning and Management team, to develop their communications channels with councillors.

2007 Managing a tender

Inspire Communications managed a four-month tender process on behalf of SCC to recruit a design and marketing communications agency to support the council’s Adult Community and Learning service. We scoped out the service’s needs and developed an initial brief and full tender document. We managed pitches and assessed tenderers to select the successful company in conjunction with council staff. (see case studies)

2007-08 Communications strategy for council’s major projects

SCC had a range of major projects running concurrently across all its departments, which would fundamentally change how the council operated its services. We scoped out the communications needs across these projects towards developing a strategy that ensured key messages reached the right audience without information overload.

Inspire Communications organised a programme of events including:

  • Five drop-in information sessions about domestic violence and protecting yourself.
  • A day’s workshop for teenage girls promoting pride and confidence in being a woman.
  • Two training days for professionals working with people experiencing domestic violence.

We worked closely with LCPT to understand their target audiences. We sourced expert trainers to run courses for professional workers and managed all aspects of marketing, venues, scheduling and running the events.
